POLICE OFFICERS across
Europe are preparing for their latest "Speed Marathon". The 24-hour
initiative forms part of TISPOL’s week-long speed enforcement operation,
running from Monday 17th to Sunday 23rd April 2017. Kent Police and the Kent & Medway Safety
Camera Partnership will be conducting focused speed enforcement activities throughout
the week, with a particular focus on 23rd April as our “Speed marathon” day.
TISPOL
is the European traffic police network, committed to reducing death, serious
injury, and crime on the roads of Europe.
Kent Police and the Kent & Medway Safety Camera Partnership are
proud to support Europe-wide initiatives led by TISPOL such as the Speed Marathon
in April and Project EDWARD (European Day Without A Road Death) on 21st
September 2017.
Although the Safety Camera
Partnership conducts speed enforcement activity all year round across Kent and
Medway, the Speed Marathon provides a focus for enforcement activity and offers
the chance to work in close partnership with the Roads Policing Unit to get the
message out that speeding is unacceptable.
1,732
people were killed on UK roads in 2015, around a quarter of those were as a
result of excess speed. If you hit a
pedestrian or cyclist at 40mph there is a 31% chance they’ll die. If
you hit them at 30mph there is a 93% chance they’ll live.
We’re
asking all road users to play their part.
Take a bit of speed out, put a bit of space in, belt up, and ditch the
distractions.
