Motorists are advised that from Tuesday 7 June 2011 there will be a temporary 30mph speed limit in Ramsgate on the A299 between Minster roundabout and Cliffsend North while the East Kent Access Phase 2 road works are carried out.
For the safety of both motorists and the workforce Kent County Council has asked the Kent & Medway Safety Camera Partnership to enforce its 30mph limit with a mobile safety camera van. The speed limit is likely to be in place until the end of the year and it will be enforced in both directions.
Motorists are reminded that the temporary 30mph speed limit – which is clearly signed – applies at all times of the day and night, including weekends, and whether or not workmen are on site. This is for a number of reasons:
- Enforcing the speed limit during the day but not at night will confuse motorists, and there will be some nights when contractors will be working at the roadside with heavy machinery
- Drivers may be hesitating if junctions or turnings have been temporarily closed
- To physically cover and uncover the signs every evening and every morning would endanger the lives of the workforce
Katherine Barrett, Communications Officer for the Kent and Medway Safety Camera Partnership, said: "We have been asked by Kent County Council to enforce the 30mph limit to protect both motorists and the workers on site. We urge all drivers to respect the temporary speed limit until the works are complete. The works are clearly signed with the black and white camera signs as well as the speed limit. The message is clear - slow down for your own safety, as well as the safety of other road users and the workforce. The penalty is a speeding fine which is £60 and three points on your driving licence, and drivers should also note that the vans enforce mobile phone and seat belt offences."
